Recipe: Recall

“I want students to say it before they hear it.”

Recall turns your video into the answer key. The student is given the meaning, tries to say it in the language they are learning, and then your video says it.

How one item plays

  1. Prompt

The translation appears, and can be read aloud by the student’s browser.

  2. Think and speak

A short countdown. The student says it in the target language.

  3. Your video answers

Your sentence plays from its first sound.

The same recipe in both directions

For an English lesson

Korean prompt, shown or spoken

커피 한 잔 주세요.

English speech in your video

I’d like a cup of coffee.

For a Korean lesson

English prompt, shown or spoken

I’d like a cup of coffee.

Korean speech in your video

커피 한 잔 주세요.

The answer must begin cleanly

In Recall the student has just spoken and is listening hard for the first syllable of your answer. That is exactly where the player jumps to.

Good

The first syllable is heard whole.

Avoid

A transition effect covers the first syllable, and the student hears it every time.

Writing the prompts

The prompt is the translation of each sentence. It may be spoken by a synthetic voice, so write it the way it should be said.

Good prompts

  • A complete, natural sentence
  • The same meaning and the same politeness as the answer
  • One clear way to say it

Avoid

  • Notes in brackets: (formal), (to a friend)
  • Alternatives with slashes: go / leave
  • A loose paraphrase the student cannot map back

Tell the lesson which language the video speaks

Recall needs to know which side is the question and which is the answer. Set the video language to English for an English video and Korean for a Korean video. Make one video per language: a video that mixes both cannot be an answer key for either.

What students can do with it

  • Prompt voiceThe prompt is read aloud by the browser’s own speech, at a speed the student picks.
  • Countdown3 or 5 seconds to think and speak, or none.
  • Random orderRecall in shuffled order is the hardest and most useful drill.
  • Favorites and MasteryStudents keep working on the ones they miss.

Test it the way students will use it

Load your lesson in Shadowing Player on the published video and run these before you share it.

  • Three speeds

Play a few sentences at 0.75×, 1.0× and 1.25×. A boundary that is fine at one speed can clip at another.

  • Three repeats in a row

Repeat one sentence three times. Listen for a clipped ending and for the first sound of the next sentence.

  • Distant random jumps

Turn Random on and step through ten sentences. Each one should start cleanly after a jump from far away.

  • Twenty recall items

If the lesson is for Recall, do twenty in a row. Check that each prompt and its answer mean the same thing.

  • Every quiz branch

Choose every answer of every question once. A branch nobody clicked is a branch that may be broken.
